That’s Not The Story That I Want Told

I wrote this song as a response to someone who said should sing sweeter.

As I type this, I’m grinning. I might be a fairly sweet soul but I not a sweet singer. I’ve got a gravelly, soulful voice, and I don’t think I could sing sweetly even I tried. And that made me think of all the times folks have suggested I paint differently too. But that’s not the story that I want told…

So I wrote a song about how I am finally comfortable with who I am.

Girl on tricycleFeels good 🙂

Enjoy…

The Way That I Roll

Can you sing it sweet

With a lot less soul

Can you lift the beat

Oh you’re way too slow

I’m thinking

That’s not the story that I want told

Oh that’s not the way that I roll

Can you paint it neat

Hey a lot less bold

Can you tone it down

Oh it’ll never get sold

I’m thinking

That’s not the story that I want told

Oh that’s not the way that I roll

I was the queen of over-blending

Every single brush stroke

Only the shower walls and the mending

Ever heard my notes

Now I’m keen and I quit pretending

I’m painting every hue of my soul

Now I

I roll in kindness

I roll in truth

But I won’t

Roll in spineless just to please you

I wonder

Could you feel it deep

Could you lose control

Could they let folks see what they’ve never told

I’m thinking

That’s not the story that you want told

Hey

That’s just the way that you roll

Darling

Oh that’s just the way that you roll
