Chris Sorensen celebrated his 94th birthday on June 30th.The sculptor and champion of the arts/artists is still going strong. He gets around his vast studio (25,000 square feet) on a three wheeled bicycle, and he makes sure to connect with all who visit.
During one one visit, Chris made me a cup of tea and talked to me about the possibility of renting studio space in his gallery. I declined as his warehouse is not air conditioned. (Fresno averages triple digits during the summer, and I have to admit, I can not take the heat!) He grinned and told me that during his youth, they would soak quilts in water, hang them from trees, and then sleep in hammocks between the trees. Wonder if that’s where they got the term swamp cooler?
No matter how he’s feeling you can find him most days in the studio busy at work. He’s an artist’s artist. He creates every day and always willing to help someone along the way. If you’d like to be inspired, stop by and pay him a visit!
While you’re there check out the portraits of Chis by members of the Yosemite Western Artists. They are a featured exhibit during the month of July. I am honored to be among these talented folks 🙂
